A Lapse in Judgement

What I was thinking when I went to the Private Hole Saturday morning, with a North wind howling and getting colder by the minute, I do not know. Perhaps I thought I’d get in on the last of the pre cold front bite. Maybe it was because I knew someone had fished there the day before and caught a cooler of crappie. Whatever the reason, the thinking behind it was bad. I started off with a DT-6 and caught two in a reasonable amount of time. Continuing with a DT-6, I lost one and then hooked an Asian carp that headed for the next state. It pulled line past my knot down to the backing and was threatening to go to the spool.  I had to chase it with the trolling motor to make sure it didn’t take all my line. It was hooked toward the back and when it came up its tail came out of the water and it lost traction. That’s when I struck. My boat hook saved the DT-6 with a deft move snatching the bait out of the fish. The bass then would only bite something slow, so out came the shakey head. I caught 3 more but fishing with a worm in that kind of wind while shivering is not too much fun, so I did something I don’t do very often, I quit.
