Cane Creek

Jackson and I started a little late this morning around 6:15. It had been light enough to fish for 30 or 45 minutes. Being late mattered not however, because we didn’t get a bite for a long time. I had visions of catching some fish on Ribbit frogs because Cane Creek is full of lily pads of all varieties. After fishing a long way down a line of pads with only a light slap at the Ribbit, we decided to do something else. On the way to do something else we saw some schooling bass out in the open on the North end of the lake. I put on a Yozuri and Jackson a chrome looking rattle trap. The Yozuri caught some but the rattle trap hooks would not hang the fish when they bit. Fishing for schooling bass is frustrating to say the least. They would come up just out of casting range and when you got close enough they would surface some where else. If you made a cast, immediately the fish would surface close enough to cast to but in another direction. We changed baits a good bit. As the schooling slowed we fished a line of scattered pads, Jackson with a swim bait and me with a swim jig. In short order we caught one and lost another. That bite ran out. We saw the schooling fish pick back up again and started chasing them again, me with a Yozuri and Jackson with a spook. This time they turned up their nose to the Yozuri and loved the spook. I put on two different topwaters but could not hook a fish or keep one pinned when I did hook one. When the schooling fish ran out we decided to try some more pads with a Ribbit and a fluke. I managed to catch one on a Ribbit, the only one this year and a camouflaged looking gar. Things had slowed so we made a move for the ramp, but not a very fast move. The lake is full of stumps. I don’t believe I have ever been in a boat on a plane on that lake. We ended up with 15 bass and a FOD of 3.25 pounds. We counted up that we tried 14 different baits. I remember that we started back home at 3:02.
