Nothing to do with fishing

Saturday, August 01st, 2009 | Author:

This has nothing to do with fishing but is neat and pretty. I saw this moth under the night light at Catfish. It had its wings closed and all you could see was the yellow outside of the top pair of wings. As I approached and barely touched its abdomen, it slowly raised its top wings to show its “eyes”.  It is a defense mechanism, to make it look like an owl or something of the sort to a hungry bird.080120097001

I think he’s a giant silkworm or royal moth, but who knows which one.

It is indeed in the Giant Silkworm Moth family (Saturniidae) and is a male Automeris io. Only a 2 1/2 inch wingspan, not at large as others in that family.
